Professional associations and societies associated with sexuality and its problems

bulletBritish Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapy
BASRT is the professional and regulatory body for sexual and relationship therapists in the UK. The site describes the Association, its aims, activities and provides a list of practising therapists around the UK.

bulletBritish Association of Urological Surgeons
BAUS is the professional and academic organisation for urological surgeons and affiliate of the Royal College of Surgeons (see below). This is an attractive site, but takes a while to download because of the flash graphics! Part of it is password protected.

bulletEuropean Society for Sexual Medicine
ESSM is a European society for health professionals and scientists actively working in the field of human sexuality. Its interests include all aspects of human sexuality in men and women. It is an affiliate of ISIR, the International Society for Impotence Research.

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) is a professional organization devoted to the understanding and treatment of gender identity disorders. Its website contains information about membership, conferences and standards of care.

The Kinsey Institute Web site supports interdisciplinary research and the study of human sexuality. The Institute, probably the world's most famous centre for sexology research, was founded by Dr Alfred Kinsey (1894-1956) in 1947. Apart from its outstanding academic and research activities, it possesses a quite remarkable library and art collection.

The Beaumont Trust is a UK organisation concerned with gender identity disorders. Its aims are to relieve the stress caused by transsexualism and/or transvestism to those affected, their families and friends, and to assist professional advisers in the field of care of gender dysphoria.

Couple Counselling Scotland exists to promote, develop and co-ordinate a confidential counselling service for people in marriage and other intimate personal relationships in Scotland.

bulletThe Gender Trust
The Gender Trust is a Registered Charity in the U.K. which specifically helps adults who are transsexual, gender dysphoric or transgenderist, that is, those who seek to adjust their lives to live as women or men, or to come to terms with their situation despite their genetic background. 

bulletThe Sexual Dysfunction Association
The Sexual Dysfunction Association is a charitable organisation which was set up as the Impotence Association to help sufferers of impotence (erectile dysfunction) and their partners and to raise awareness of the condition amongst both the public and the medical profession.  Its interests now include all aspects of human sexuality in both men and women.

The BMA is both the doctors' professional organisation and an independent trade union protecting the professional and personal interests of its members.

bulletThe General Medical Council
The GMC is the regulatory and licensing authority for all doctors practising in the UK. It has legal powers designed to maintain the standards the public has a right to expect of doctors. Where any doctor fails to meet those standards, the GMC can act to protect patients from harm - if necessary, by striking the doctor off the register and removing their right to practise medicine.

The MHRA is an executive agency of the Department of Health set up to enhance and safeguard the health of the public by ensuring that medicines and medical devices work and are acceptably safe.

bulletUK Department of Health
This government department site contains a wealth of useful information on UK health policy and services. It also has a searchable index of Health Service Circulars (COIN) that may be downloaded as .pdf files. These include current UK government policy on ED treatment: HSC 1999/148 (availability of impotence treatment within the NHS) and HSC 1999/177 (treatment for patients with severe distress caused by impotence).
